What to Wear to the Snow: A Hunter Family's Guide to Staying Warm Without Buying a Whole New Wardrobe

Every winter, social media fills with photos of families heading to the snow. This year, it was our turn.
With three excited kids in tow, we packed the car and headed to the Snowy Mountains for a few days of snow play and tobogganing at Selwyn Snow Resort. Like many Hunter families, we knew this wasn't going to become a weekly hobby, so spending hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars on specialist snow gear that would spend the next ten years in the cupboard just didn't make sense.
Instead, we decided to see how well quality winter clothing from Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety Hunter would perform on a family snow trip.
The results honestly surprised us.
Layering is the secret
The biggest lesson we learnt was that layering is everything.
Before we left, we picked up a simple pair of snow pants each, along with thermals and wool-blend socks to use as our base layers. Rather than investing in a complete wardrobe of specialist snow gear, we paired those essentials with warm outerwear and boots from Hip Pocket—and it worked brilliantly.
For a short holiday spent building snowmen, throwing snowballs and tobogganing, we stayed warm, dry and comfortable all day.
Emily's snow-day outfit
My outfit was simple but incredibly effective. I wore:
-
Thermals
-
Snow pants
-
A Hard Yakka Zoodie Hoodie
-
A Biz Collection Summit Jacket
-
Blundstone Premium Leather Elastic-Sided Boots
-
Wool-blend socks
Between building snowmen, throwing snowballs and countless trips down the toboggan run, I spent hours outside in freezing temperatures.
Despite all of that, I stayed warm and dry and, perhaps most impressively, my feet stayed completely comfortable. My Blundstones are a couple of years old now and have seen plenty of muddy sidelines at the kids' sporting games, but they handled the snow just as well.
John's snow-day outfit
John layered up with:
-
Thermals
-
Snow pants
-
The Mack Workwear Men's Shearling Fleece ¼ Zip Hoodie
-
A Jetpilot On-Site Jacket
-
Blundstone Premium Leather Elastic-Sided Boots
-
Wool-blend socks
His Blundstones were almost brand new, and after a full day outside, he was just as impressed. Warm, dry feet make a huge difference when you're spending hours chasing kids around in the snow!
Even the snowman was dressed for the occasion!
If you look closely at our family photo, you'll spot our snowman proudly wearing a Mongrel Boots beanie. We figured even he deserved quality winter gear!
It's not just about the snow
The best part?
Everything we wore from Hip Pocket has become part of our regular winter wardrobe back home.
Our jackets have already been perfect for:
-
Standing on the sidelines at the kids' weekend sport
-
Watching the Knights on a cold evening
-
Early morning school drop-offs
-
Camping trips
-
Chilly mornings around the Hunter
-
Winter weekends in Barrington Tops or the Upper Hunter
And our Blundstones? They're just as handy standing in muddy sports fields as they are trudging through snow.
Unlike specialist snow jackets that might only come out once every few years, these are practical pieces we'll wear all winter long.

So... do you need specialist snow gear?
If you're planning a family trip for snow play or tobogganing like we did, probably not.
A good pair of thermals, some snow pants, warm socks and quality outer layers were more than enough to keep us comfortable throughout our trip.
Of course, if you're heading away for a week of skiing or snowboarding, specialist snow gear is still the best option. But for families like ours looking for a memorable winter adventure without buying an entire snow wardrobe, layering quality clothing made all the difference.
Whether you're heading to Selwyn Snow Resort, exploring the Snowy Mountains, visiting Barrington Tops, or simply cheering on the kids from the sidelines this winter, warm, practical clothing is an investment you'll use again and again.
After all... if it can survive a family snowball fight, it's probably ready for whatever winter throws at you.
